NCNW Long Island Cross County Section – Our Local Legacy

Chartered: 1995

Organized By: Mrs. Johnnie Walker

Affiliation: National Council of Negro Women, Inc.

Mission: To continue the vision of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune by empowering women and girls of African descent, strengthening families, and serving our local communities across Long Island.

Our Beginning

The NCNW Long Island Cross County Section was organized on April 24, 1994 to unite women across the diverse communities of Nassau and Suffolk Counties under one purpose; service, leadership and sisterhood. Our founders recognized the unique needs of Black women and families on Long Island and set out to address them through education, advocacy and community outreach.

Our Purpose in Action

From the start, our Section has carried forward the national mission while focusing on local impact. We work to:

  • Provide leadership development for women and girls

  • Support youth mentorship and college readiness programs

  • Address community needs through health, civic engagement, and social service projects

  • Build partnerships with other organizations to strengthen our collective work

Community Impact

Over 31 years, the Long Island Cross County Section has:

  • Hosted scholarship programs to help young women pursue higher education

  • Led voter registration and civic engagement drives to strengthen our communities’ voices

  • Organized youth leadership training and mentorship opportunities

  • Coordinated service projects supporting families, seniors, and underserved neighborhoods

Our Connection to the National Movement

As part of the National Council of Negro Women, our Section contributes to a movement of over 2 million women worldwide. We stand in solidarity with our sister sections across the country and abroad, living Dr. Bethune’s call to “lift as we climb” right here on Long Island.

Looking Forward

Today, our Section continues to grow, driven by women and girls committed to honoring our history and shaping the future. Whether through our Youth Section, community programs, or advocacy work, we remain dedicated to making a positive difference locally and globally.

We are NCNW Long Island Cross County Section.

Rooted in history. Powered by service. Inspired by sisterhood.
